One of my favorite ways to update a window is with adhesive film. Adhesive window films makes the room more energy efficient by shading the room and provide a privacy screen that doesn't take up any space. Cost-effective, the film won't break the bank and is cheaper than installing a new window. Some of my favorite films come from a company based out of the UK called Brume. Hardware stores such as Lowe's carries Gila film, an affordable film that's offered in a wide selection of patterns.
